Watering Roses – Tips For Successful Blooms

June 14th, 2008 K.Finch Posted in Gardening | No Comments »

It‘s not always easy to attain beauty and accomplish perfection, but by following basic guidelines you can ensure a beautiful show of roses. One of the basic tips is to learn how and when to water your roses and keep in mind there are good times and bad times. So to encourage your roses and reward yourself with the best display ever, all year round, just follow these simple steps:

Morning Dew

We all know how wonderful it is first thing in the morning, when the fresh due has settled and everything is coming alive before the sun becomes too warm. This is the best time to water your roses, so they are fresh and prepared for the heat of the day. If you leave it until later, the sun will evaporate most of the water, leaving little chance for it to reach the roots. If you water in the evening the coolness will keep your plant damp, the leaves will stay wet which can cause mildew. However, not all of us are awake with the lark and able begin our watering regime that early. If you can’t water early, do it as soon as you can. If it’s early evening, try not to get the leaves too wet, just concentrate on the roots of the roses. The leaves will take care of themselves by taking in natural moisture from the evening air, keeping them free from mildew, insects, pets and fungal diseases, which can all damage roses.

Hazy Heat

Roses are well known for being thirsty and it’s only a dedicated gardener who can keep up with the constant routine, but gardeners will be the first to tell you, that all the hard work and perseverance really does pay off. Roses on the whole require between 1 and 2 inches of water each week, one simple way of measuring rainfall is to invest in a rainwater gauge. You can then add the extra amount of water as needed to make up the 1 to 2 inches. The type of climate and soil that you have will determine the amount of water your roses consume. This is where your previous hard work pays off, by watering your plants well in spring you will have made your plants hardy and held them in good stead for the hot dry days of summer. You do need to be aware of the warning signs that not all is well and to keep these in mind when observing your roses. If the leaves are beginning to wilt then they probably just need their thirst quenching. If they are turning yellow and starting to drop off then that’s a sign you are over watering and the plant is unable to breathe the oxygen because of water saturation.

It is also important you check for adequate drainage or ground that is not level, roses like a lot of water, but they don’t like standing in puddles, so be mindful not to get carried away with the water hose.

Start at the bottom

The golden rule to remember is to always start watering at base of the plant where most of the energy and development takes place. The roots need to be healthy and strong to help the roses grow. The plants will take moisture from the air and draw from the roots. One way to ensure a constant water supply is to set up a drip feed or hose to irrigate the soil. Rose plants could receive approximately 1 to 2 gallons of water per foot per hour, according to the type of hose and pressure of your water supply. You could set up a timer to turn the water on and off at intervals during the day, very useful when you haven’t the time to water or have to be somewhere else.

No Pests Allowed

To prevent pests from destroying your roses it’s a good idea to spray every two or three days with just a fine mist of water, check your hose for a fine setting. A good quick wash will keep insects at bay but not enough to encourage mildew. Take care to flush the inside of the foliage where pests can collect. If you can do this early in the day it will give the leaves time to dry before the sun goes down and the temperature cools.

Home Security: Basics of Protecting Your Home From Crime

June 14th, 2008 Susan-JaneFrank Posted in Home Management | No Comments »

It can be a nightmare scenario. You return to your home only to find it to be in shambles with most of your home’s valuable gone. You feel violated and sick to your stomach. But it does not have to be that way. Preventing a burglar from breaking into your home and making off with your things can be done simply by practicing and implementing a well-thought-out plan. While there is no security system that is one hundred percent effective against a determined thief, this guide can help dissuade the amateur criminal which is the most frequent offender.

The first step in any home security planning is to survey your property inside and out to look for security risks that are obvious or stand-out. For instance, are there any open or unlocked windows that are easily accessible from the ground? When you are away make sure all doors and windows are closed and locked.

Are your valuables or high ticket items easily visible from the street? Computers, digital cameras, hi-def televisions, cash and jewelry are always hot on the list of stolen items. Avoid having these items too close to windows if possible and close your blinds or drapes when you leave the home. The old saying “out of sight, out of mind” applies here.

Second, take a look at the surroundings of your home. Are there areas around your house, especially close to windows and doors, that are not easily visible from the street or by neighbors? Hidden areas on your property can allow burglars to take their time trying to gain access. These areas may need additional security measures on the windows and doors. Having a fenced yard will help to keep criminals from being able to casually scope-out all your homes potential entrances. Just remember, having a privacy fence is private for you but also for a thief as well. If you back door has a deadbolt then use it.

Is your neighborhood at a higher risk of being burglarized? Homes that back onto ravines or woodlands, are close to subway stations, or are on corners tend to be bigger targets as they provide easier escape routes for thieves. This does not mean that you should avoid buying these types of properties, but just that you need to be aware and take extra precautions.

If you have just moved into a new home, take the time to walk the neighborhood and make a habit of it. This will allow you to not only get to know your neighbors but also start to recognize the faces of the people in your area. If someone does not belong in your community you will be able to spot them more easily. It might even be an opportunity to organize a neighborhood watch.

Making a checklists of all of the things you need to do to make your home more secure will help and ensure that you do not overlook any important details. You can also speak to your local police department. They will usually have a list of tips for you and provide you with information on specific things to watch out for in your community.

Securing your home will not only help protect your home but also your family. By following a few simple measures you can make your home less appealing to thieves and less likely that you will become a victim of burglary.

Getting Ready For Your Home Renovation

June 14th, 2008 PaulAndrew Posted in Home Management | No Comments »

A home renovation or remodel project may include the exterior of your house, one or more rooms and an addition or two. No matter what the scope, renovating your home is sure to be painful if you aren’t prepared.

Start by defining the scope of the remodel project. Decide what areas of your home that you would like to have renovated. Put together a wish list of what you want included in the project. What you can and cannot do will be, in part, decided by your finances.

Once you have defined the scope of the project the key issues you will want to consider are:

Local laws and permits

The need for neighbor approval.

Financing and budgeting.

Choosing an architect.

Choosing a contractor.

Selecting an interior designer.

Moving out during the construction process.

Packing and cleaning.

When undergoing a renovation project people most often start with an architect. While an architect is absolutely required for a renovation project, you may want to consider starting your due diligence with your interior designer. Chances are they can help you to fine tune how you will use your space, the intended look and feel and ultimately help to make your dream a reality.

More often than not, designers, architects and contractors work together on major renovation projects to ensure a cohesive approach to carrying out the client’s vision.

From a design perspective, since your designer will be the resident expert on the ultimate functionality of the space, having them involved early allows you to have more control over important things we take for granted such as placement of electrical outlets, task lighting and architectural detailing.

Once your renovation plan has been completed and approved by you, you can identify if you will need to purchase new furniture or accessories or re-purpose existing items that you have.

It is important to know that your budget and timeline of a major renovation project will change at least once if not more during construction. Experts recommend that you plan for the budget to increase by twenty-five percent and the time involved by thirty percent.

When your renovation project is complete you will undergo an inspection and be provided with an occupancy permit. Do a final walkthrough of the project with the architect, contractors and designer to make absolutely sure that everything is working as required. Create a punch list of little tasks that are undone and assign someone the task of finishing each task. Make sure that everyone reports back to you or your project manager/renovation coach by a specific time to make sure everything is finished.

Once your project is underway, you may find yourself overwhelmed or stressed out from all of the activity, keep drawing and photos of your finished project easily accessible so that you can remind yourself of the beauty that awaits you.

Insurance Claims and Potpourri

June 13th, 2008 JonCaldwell Posted in Home Management | No Comments »

Generally, there are no guidelines as to when is the proper time to file a claim. Decisions tend to be made based on individual claims made by the customers of insurance carriers. Each company is different and customers are subject to their preferences. Some may raise a hike for a single claim filed. Others wait for two filed claims within a 3 year time period before triggering a hike. Most often, companies have a standard basis for their judgment. That is, the period of time the customer has spent with the company or the nature of the claim filed by the customer.

Inquiries are most often mistaken as claims and may be used by companies against the customers. This is because most of the time, insurance carriers submit information to CLUE when they call simply for an inquiry. To combat this, some states have taken measures to restrict the information found in these databases. Others have laws that regulate the consideration of inquiries as claims.

Data in the databases, both CLUE and A-PLUS, is retained for 5 years. So long as they comply with the Fair and Accurate Credit Transitions Act, states can pass legislation requiring information to be kept for a longer period of time.

Of the two databases, CLUE or Claim Loss Underwriting Exchange is the more popular one. Such is the popularity it enjoys that people in the insurance industry field affectionately call reports generated by the database as CLUE reports. The same goes for reports generated by A-PLUS as well.

The information withheld within the database is so expansive, that people barely realize the extent of what insurance companies can do. The companies have free jurisdiction over the database on how much information they can use to research and screen applicants. Afterwards, some cases could be raised to higher rates and the applicants might have difficulty obtaining coverage in the future.

Shiver in fear and tremble. When the insurance company places your name amongst those in THE database, you know you’re in trouble. Expect higher premiums, difficulties in obtaining new insurances, and loss of coverage as some of the things that will come your way once you’re in the blackballed list.

Most claims are recorded in one or both of the major known databases: CLUE (Claim Loss Underwriting Exchange) and A-PLUS (Automated Property Loss Underwriting System). Claims that are registered in the databases include homeowner claims and auto claims. Health insurance and others are not associated with these databases and are not registered.

The reason why agency writers are not price competitive, is because the amount of commission that independent agents receive from them. To compare, captive seller agents receive only a commission of $100 while at agency writers, the agents receive 150 or even more direct from the premium.

So why buy insurance from them? Who in their right mind would want to buy insurance at a greater cost? The answer is that these agents will do whatever they can to accommodate you. While other insurers simply won’t cover you or will do so at staggeringly high rates, independent agents shop around and find deals that untrained eyes don’t normally see.

Evaluate Your Home Insurance to Cover Everything

June 13th, 2008 JonCaldwell Posted in Home Management | No Comments »

A home insurance can help you out if you decide to get a lone using your house as collateral. A mortgage is a form of a loan where you borrow money from a bank with your house sort of like a safety net. If you are not able to pay them back, they can seize your house and have full control of it. A home insurance policy on a mortgaged home assures the bank that it can still collect on the debt in the event that the mortgaged house is destroyed or any untoward events may happen to decrease its market value.

Home insurance policies are usually term policies, meaning you can only be covered for a specific length of time. Due to this fact, you may have to renew your insurance policy from time to time, or until your current one expires. Also, have your home and its contents re-appraised so that they would still be covered adequately. Your insurer can do the appraisal, but you do have to pay them for this service. Depending on the state of your house and its contents, the premium on your policy or the amount that you have to pay may increase or decrease.

You have bought your own house, got the furniture and items you want inside it, and now, you want to protect the house that you have worked so hard for. A home insurance policy usually will depend on how much it would take to replace the entire house and the things inside it which you want to be insured. The policy itself is very specific, and it would normally specify the actual circumstances and events upon which the insurance can be claimed. Special circumstances such as floods and earthquakes could be insured, if you are willing to shoulder further expenses for insurance against these events.

What exactly is a home insurance policy? In simple terms, this kind of policy protects your house and the things and people inside it. It covers a variety of incidents which may happen to the house itself, such as destruction by a fire or vandalism; it may also cover any damage to its contents, such as loss due to theft; it may also be applicable to accidents which may occur inside the house. It would be wise to avail of one especially if your house is on the upper scale, and if you have any significant and expensive stuff stashed inside.

Home insurance policies would usually cover any damage in the event of accidents, burglaries and the like, and they even replace lost items inside your home. But to those planning on duping insurance companies in giving them money they don’t deserve, beware. These companies have people who go over everything in your statement and check out if you really are telling the truth. Those who try to cheat regarding their insurance claims and are found to be guilty could even be sent to jail. So be smart when it comes to these things, be honest and don’t even try any funny business.

You don’t actually have to do the dirty work of dealing with the fine print in insurance policies yourself; this can be done for you by insurance agents who would be more than willing to help out. Find one you can trust, for it is your money that you would be entrusting to them, not just that, but also your future. When you have found an agent you are comfortable with, make sure that he or she will be able to explain well the terms of your policy, and also give you a set of different options to choose from.

How to Build the Ultimate Home Aquarium

June 13th, 2008 DerekRogers Posted in Gardening | No Comments »

Aquariums provide a number of great benefits. They are beautiful additions to the home, for example. Watching the gentle movements of the fish can also help reduce stress levels in humans.

Before you begin putting together your own dream aquarium, there are a few points you should consider first.

Freshwater or Tropical?

The biggest decision you need to make is whether your aquarium will contain fresh water or tropical fish. Obviously, the two can’t be blended together. If you’re not sure which you prefer, here are some factors to help you make that decision:

* Experience - If you are new to aquariums, then go with a fresh water tank. Tropical fish are more difficult to maintain, even for people with lots of experience.

* Budget - If money is tight, then go with a fresh water aquarium. These are usually much cheaper to set up.

* Appearance - If you have your heart set on a gorgeous aquarium full of colour, then you should go for a tropical aquarium. You’ll have more options and the colours are often more vibrant.

* Room - Space is an important factor. Fresh water aquariums can be very small so if you have a small apartment then this might be the right choice for you. If you’re trying to fill up a blank wall in your living room, then a tropical aquarium might be a wiser pick.

* Fish- Go to your local aquarium store before you make this decision and look at the selection of fish. Do you see some varieties you’d want to include in your own aquarium? Find out what type of environment they need and let that be a factor in your decision.

If you’re still unsure about which to choose, do some research on the Internet or read a few library books on the topic to help cement your decision.

Preliminary Steps

After deciding on a type of aquarium, you’ll need to begin purchasing supplies. Always purchase the supplies prior to buying the fish. You need the aquarium to be up and running for a few days before you introduce any living creatures.

Obviously, your supplies will include the tank itself, a cover, a net, coverscape (the material that goes on the bottom of the tank), plants (either real or artificial) and some hiding areas (castles, rocks, caves, etc.). Depending on the tank and the fish you choose, you may also need to purchase a heater, a filter, salt water mixture and other items.

Do your homework before you get to the store so you’ll know what is necessary. Don’t let a pushy sales clerk convince you to buy things you don’t need.

Follow the directions on your supplies and set up the aquarium. You want to watch the whole thing for 24 to 72 hours to make sure the water is staying at the correct temperature, the filter is working, and that the environment will be healthy for your new fish.

Finally, you’ll want to select your fish. Choose fish that will live well together. Also pick fish that eat at various levels in the aquarium: some eat at the top, others from the middle and others from the bottom. Having some at each level means you’ll have less food left over in your coverscape.

Make sure to purchase the right type of food for your fish as well.

By following these basic steps, you can be on your way to creating your own amazing aquarium in your home or office.

All About Backyard Landscaping and the Necessary Tools

June 13th, 2008 ChristaKowalczyk Posted in Home Management | No Comments »

Backyard landscaping greatly enhances the appearance of one of the most personal areas of your home. Backyard landscaping has a number of forms. Each form involves a set of procedures and tools you need to learn about in order to properly apply the desired improvement.

Your backyard is one of the most personal parts of your home. It is where you usually do your activities related to carpentry. It is where you would relax after a busy day at the workplace. Given the significance of your backyard, you need to think of the best way to enhance its overall appearance and structure. And the most appropriate means of doing so is to learn about backyard landscaping.

Backyard landscaping refers to a set of principles and methods involved in improving the natural appearance of the said piece of land. It has two major forms: soft landscaping and hard landscaping. Soft landscaping pertains to the processes involved in improving the backyard through planting trees, shrubs, and grass in its area. Hard landscaping deals with the installation of fences, paving, and patios. You can apply one of the said forms of backyard landscaping, or you may choose to apply both.

Once you have chosen which form of backyard landscaping to carry out, you can then proceed in the initial stages of landscaping. First, you need to carefully plan what you want to do in your backyard. Take some time and observe your backyard. Decide on the plants or structures that you want and determine whether they are appropriate for your backyard. You should also consider the backyard’s overall space while identifying the things you want to place in it. If you want to have plants in your backyard, make sure that the location of the plants is directly hit by sunlight. To have a clear idea of your plan, you may want to draw the layout of your backyard once your chosen type of landscaping has been done in it.

After you have developed a layout for your backyard, you then have to know about the various tools you need in performing your landscaping. The type of tools you would need will depend on whether you choose to do soft landscaping or hard landscaping.

If your goal is to plant grass, your tools should include a spreader, a rake, and a weighted roller. A spreader is used in ensuring that you provide even coverage in terms of the seeds that would be planted on the ground. If you have a small backyard, you can use a hand spreader. On the other hand, you can use a drop spreader or a rotary spreader if you have a large yard. The rake is used to check the soil level and to mix in the seeds. The weighted roller is used to compress down the seeds. This device is also used to create grass patterns. Furthermore, the tools needed to plant trees and shrubs include the shovel, the garden fork, the rake, and shears.

For hard landscaping, the tools you would need would depend on the structures you plan to build. Examples of the frequently used tools in hard landscaping are the hammer, the shovel, the electric or manual saw, the wire cutter, the tamping bar, and leather gloves. Other tools used in hard landscaping are brushes for applying paint and a plane for making wooden surfaces smooth.

How to Remove Rust From Bolts and Screws!

June 13th, 2008 MarkusSkupeika Posted in Home Management | No Comments »

Are you stuck in rusted bolts and screws and have tried all your strength to open it up but failed in every attempt? Don’t worry, this is a very common story and almost everyone has been across such a situation at some point of time in his or her life.

Especially if those bolts and screws are left open in moisture for long, they will grow rust very soon. And once they get rusted it is often very tough to unscrew if not impossible. For example screws and bolts in car parts, boats or even lawn mowers often get rusted as they are almost always open to moisture. And the biggest problem is, it is tough to keep them away from moisture. The problem becomes more intense once rust gets into the threads or when rust eats up the metal head of the screw making it difficult to grip with a screwdriver.

Sometimes you can just throw away those rusted screws and blots but in many cases you need to restore the existing one as it is impossible to find a replacement for a lot of screws in local hardware stores. In these situations it becomes crucial that you can clean up those screws and bolts properly so that you can reuse them after cleaning.

People try different things in similar situation to remove rust and open those screws and other metal bodies. Some of them are effective and some of them do not have any proven record. Here are some common ways that people use to effectively remove rust:

The most common solution is using penetrating oil bought from local hardware store. All you need to do in this situation is to pore a few drops of penetration oil on the screw, keep things as it is for a few moments and than use screwdriver to open it. If necessary you may even need to use a narrow chisel and a hammer to move the rusted screw inside. If the condition is too poor, you may even need to leave those screws in penetration oil overnight – it should loosen up by the morning. Though this is a heavily used process to remove rust, it is not very effective.

Some people prefer using hydrogen peroxide on rusted screws and bolts. They pour some hydrogen peroxide on the screws and bolts and leave them as it is. After a while you would need to use a hard brush and clean the rust from the screw. You may also need to use some oil after cleaning the rust on it so that the screw comes out easily. It is always better to avoid Hydrogen peroxide as it often leaves some residual elements on the spot.

Another common and effective solution is using rust cleaner. You would easily find a lot of good quality rust removers in some local stores or you can even order them online. Good quality rust cleaners do not require scrubbing and brushing – all you need to do is to dip the rusted metal into the cleaner. However, it is always recommended to buy some organic rust cleaners so that you can use in for other things too.

If you want to do that in harder way, try using some fine grade sand paper and sand out all rust from the screws and bolts. However, do not forget to use some lubricant before reusing them.

There are lots of other ways people employ to remove rust from metal items. All you need to do is to find out the best solution to your problem. Whatever process you select, make sure that it is effective to remove rust from metal items of any kind so that you can use it in different ways.

What is the Best Rust Treatment?

June 13th, 2008 MarkusSkupeika Posted in Home Management | No Comments »

Rust is a big problem for any house in wet weather. You can try every possible way but it is almost impossible to keep your home rust free. And the best solution is to clean up rust as early as possible.

And it is not about metal items alone – rusts can pile up in concrete foundations, patios or even in sidewalks. And if you have light colors in the wall (that we normally have in outdoors), rust looks awfully bad and an eyesore. A small patch of rust is enough to kill the beauty of your home.

The problem is high in those areas where water pipes run beside concrete walls. And if you use well water to spray in the garden, there are high probabilities that concrete in the surrounding areas or metal items will gather rust in no time. In these situations the best thing you can do is to be careful while spraying water in the garden and use a good quality spray nozzle to be careful. But if once things start getting rusts, it normally comes back unless you remove the water source completely from the rusted metal or concrete.

But what would you do to keep the place clean and rust free?

People have different methods and apply different solutions to remove rust from metal particles and concrete walls. Here are some of the most common ways for rust treatment:

The most common first step is to brush out remaining paint from the rusted surface and surrounding area. You can use some good quality wire brush to clean the place. When the place is clean from rusts, you can use some good quality metal primer and rust resistant paint on the top. This is a good solution to keep your metal furniture away from rust for a long time. You can redo the process whenever there is some rust in metal items or concrete walls.

Some people would try lemon juice to keep the concrete wall or metal furniture free from rusts. They take it as a natural solution to rust problems. In this situation all you need to do is to apply some lemon juice on the rusted area and leave them as it is for half an hour depending on the quality and condition of rusted area. Later on, you would need to scrub the rusted area with a good quality brush and wash out the rust with enough water. However, in some cases, lemon juice makes the wall discolored or leaves some stains behind no matter how well you rinse the place. This method is handy but not effective for all occasions and for all surfaces.

Some people even recommend vinegar to clean rust stain from concrete wall or metal items. It follows the same process as lemon juice.

However, most widely used solution is that of using rust removal solutions to clean rust easily and effectively. They are easy to apply and you do not need to scrub the place for proper rust treatment. These are cheap and you can use them in any surface. However, if you want to use these rust removal solutions, try to find out an organic one. The organic solutions are non acidic and does not harm the surroundings. For example if you use acid based cleaners (both lemon and vinegar are acid based cleaners) they may harm plants in the adjacent areas or may react with the metal and leave a lasting stain on them.

So which rust products are you using next time to clean rust from metal furniture or concrete wall?

Rust is a big problem but with the right rust products, proper rust treatment is not a problem.
